Edge cleanup · Browser-only
Remove the white halo.
Keep the transparent edge.
A PNG can be transparent and still show pale edges on a dark background. This tool reduces white matte contamination in partially transparent pixels. Your image stays in your browser.
PNG only · Maximum 25 MB and 12 million pixels. Start with a cutout that already has transparency.
Original
Cleaned copy
Load the built-in example or select a transparent PNG.
The background selector changes the preview only. Export retains the source alpha channel. Cleanup always starts from the original, so adjusting the slider does not accumulate damage.
Why transparent PNGs can have white edges
When a foreground is blended against white, edge colors can retain some white even after the background is removed. On a white page this is hard to see. On a dark slide or colored website, it appears as a pale outline. It is different from a fully opaque white border.
How to clean the edge
- Open a transparent PNG. For a solid-background image, start with our white background remover.
- Choose a dark preview background and inspect fine lines and curves.
- Increase cleanup gradually. Stop if the edge becomes too dark or changes color.
- Compare against the original on white and blue backgrounds, then download the PNG.
What the strength control does
This tool uses each partially transparent pixel's alpha to estimate and subtract a white matte contribution. Strength blends that estimate with the source color. Fully opaque and fully transparent pixels are left unchanged, and the alpha values are preserved.
The method assumes white was blended into stored edge colors. It cannot reconstruct an unknown original perfectly. Correctly exported transparent artwork, deliberate pale shadows and glow effects may become darker if processed unnecessarily. Use zero strength or Undo to recover the original preview.
What it cannot fix
A solid white outline with 100% opacity is not a partially transparent fringe, so this tool leaves it intact. It also does not segment subjects, erase a complex photo background, recover missing detail or remove black and colored mattes. For general color removal, return to the color remover or PNG color-removal page.
Try a reproducible example
The built-in example draws a colored curved shape, deliberately blends white into its partial-alpha edge pixels, and runs those pixels through the same cleanup engine used for your file. It is a synthetic demonstration, not a claim about every photograph. Switch preview backgrounds to inspect the effect.
Questions about PNG halos
Will it delete white inside my logo?
Fully opaque white stays unchanged. Semi-transparent white details can change, which is why the before-and-after preview matters.
Does edge softness remove a white matte?
Softness changes transparency. Matte cleanup changes contaminated edge colors. Simply reducing alpha can leave white color behind.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Decoding, pixel processing and PNG export happen locally in your browser.
Why does my image look unchanged?
It may have no partial transparency, no white contamination, or an opaque outline outside this tool's scope. Try a dark preview background first.
